How wide should a garden arbor be?

Updated November 2026 · 2 min read · by Snug Lane

The short answerLook at the walk-through opening, not the overall width. An arbor listed as 79.5 in wide can have an opening of only about 40 in, because the side panels and planters take up the rest. That is enough for a garden path, one person carrying a tray, or a typical wheelbarrow; measure your mower deck before you plan to drive it through.

The four numbers to check

Gate, planters or bench?

A gate arbor frames the entrance to a vegetable garden or side yard and keeps dogs on one side. A planter arbor gives climbing plants their own soil at the base, so you can grow roses or jasmine on a patio or next to a fence. A bench arbor is a destination rather than a doorway: plan for space in front of the seat as well as the footprint.

FAQ

What is a good width for a garden arbor over a path? An opening of about 40 in suits most garden paths. Check the opening, since overall width includes the side panels.

How tall should an arbor be? Around 86 in or more keeps your head clear of hanging flowers. The bench arbor below is 97.2 in tall.

Can you grow roses on a metal arbor? Yes. Climbing roses, clematis, jasmine and morning glory all climb trellis sides; tie the canes in as they grow.
