How high should a dog bowl be?

How to measure
- Stand your dog on a hard floor with all four feet square.
- Measure from the floor to the point of the elbow (where the front leg meets the chest).
- Compare that number with the bowl height of the feeder, not the height of the whole cabinet. A 32 in feeding station can hold the bowls only a few inches off the floor.
The bloat question
A study from Purdue University published in 2000 linked raised food bowls with a higher risk of bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) in large and giant breed dogs. Other vets recommend raised bowls for dogs with arthritis or neck pain. Because the advice depends on the dog, the safe rule is simple: for Great Danes, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners and other deep-chested dogs, ask your vet first. For small and medium dogs, comfort and mess control are the main reasons to pick a height.
Bowl stand or feeding station?
A bowl stand only lifts the bowls. A feeding station adds a cabinet for the food bag, treats and leashes, so the whole feeding corner lives in one footprint. In October 2026 on Amazon we saw:
- Plain bowls and bowl stands: about $12-30
- Low storage bowl stands: about $43-70
- Tall cabinet feeding stations with two bowls: about $89.99-134.99
| Feeding station | Bowl height | Bowls | Storage | Footprint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Tilt-Bin Feeder | raised 5.7 in | two 7.5 in, pull-out drawer | tilt-out bin 20.75 x 14.4 in | 23.6 x 13.8 in |
| The Rattan Feeder | about 8 in | two 8.5 in, locked in | cabinet with adjustable shelf | 20.5 x 14.6 in |
| The Barn-Door Feeder | raised, pull-out drawer | two stainless | barn-door cabinet | 23.6 x 13.8 in |
A pull-out bowl drawer has one more benefit: you slide it shut after meals, so the bowls are not in the way of a robot vacuum or a toddler.
FAQ
Are raised dog bowls good or bad? They are a comfort choice for many dogs, especially older ones. For large, deep-chested breeds, ask your vet because of the reported link with bloat.
What height dog bowl for a small dog? Use the same rule: rim at or a little below elbow height. For many small dogs that is only a few inches off the floor.
Should the water bowl be raised too? Keep food and water at the same comfortable height. Stations with two bowls make that easy.
