Dog ramp or dog stairs?

Updated November 2026 · 3 min read · by Snug Lane

The short answerPick a ramp if your dog is older, heavy, long-backed or stiff, because walking up a slope asks less of the joints than climbing steps; pick stairs if your dog is sure-footed and you want something smaller to carry. For an SUV, longer is gentler: on a 30 in cargo floor a 71 in ramp sits at about 25 degrees and a 65 in ramp at about 27.5.

Measure the height first

Tape from the ground to the spot where your dog steps in: the cargo floor or the bumper of the SUV, the sofa seat, the top of the mattress. That one number decides the length you need. The slope of a ramp is set by height and length:

Height to climb65 in ramp71 in ramp
20 inabout 18 degreesabout 16 degrees
24 inabout 22 degreesabout 20 degrees
28 inabout 25.5 degreesabout 23 degrees
30 inabout 27.5 degreesabout 25 degrees
32 inabout 29.5 degreesabout 27 degrees
36 inabout 33.5 degreesabout 30.5 degrees

Many ramp makers and trainers aim for a slope of about 25 degrees or less, and lower is better for small, older or nervous dogs. If your cargo floor is above 30 in, a 71 in ramp is the one to get.

Stairs need less room behind the car, which matters in a garage or a tight parking space. A ramp needs 5-6 ft of clear ground, but every step is the same easy walk. Dogs with long backs, such as dachshunds, corgis and basset hounds, and dogs with sore hips or elbows usually find the ramp easier. If your dog has a diagnosed back or joint problem, ask your vet which they prefer.

Width and grip

A big dog walks straighter on a wider ramp. The two ramps below are 17.2 and 19.3 in wide; the wider one leaves a large dog room to walk without hugging the edge. Look for a carpet or rubber-textured tread and a strap or hook that holds the top to the car, so the ramp cannot slide while the dog is on it.

Couch and bed

Indoors, the heights are lower and a short ramp is enough. The Ottoman Ramp opens into a 31.5 x 15.75 in ramp at a 23-degree slope, about 13.6 in high at the top, which suits a sofa or a low bed, and folds back into a 15.75 in ottoman. For a tall bed, a folding car ramp also works indoors; the 71 in aluminum ramp below is sold for cars, sofas and beds.

Teach it before the trip

Lay the ramp flat on the floor and reward your dog for walking along it. Then raise one end a few inches, then a step or the sofa, and only then the car. Short sessions with treats work better than pulling the leash, and the first time at the car, hold the ramp steady with one hand.
