Dog bike trailer weight limits: which size do you need?

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read · by Snug Lane

The short answerPick a trailer whose rated limit is above your dog's weight plus anything else you put inside, such as water, a towel or a second small dog: a 66 lb trailer for medium dogs, 88-110 lb for large ones. For a dog under about 15 lb, a pet stroller is usually the simpler buy. Weight is only half the fit; your dog also has to lie down and turn around inside.

The four limits, side by side

From the manufacturer specs of the trailers we sell:

TrailerRated toTypeAssembled (in)Trailer weight

The Big Wheel Wagon88 lbBike trailer55.5 x 29 x 29.2526.5 lb
The Tow & Stroll100 lbTrailer + stroller46 x 27 x 4428.4 lb
The Big Dog Tow & Stroll110 lbTrailer + stroller51 x 27.5 x 3927 lb

All four use 20 in rear wheels, which roll over gravel, grass and curbs more easily than the 16 in wheels on some budget trailers.

Why buy above your dog's weight

The rating is the most the frame and wheels are built to carry, not a comfortable everyday load. A dog shifts its weight, stands up and lies down while you ride, and anything else in the cabin counts too. If your dog is close to a limit, step up a size.

Check length and height, not just pounds

Measure your dog lying down, nose to the base of the tail, and sitting, floor to the top of the head. The 88 lb trailer has a cabin about 28 in long under a roll-up top panel; long-bodied dogs of the same weight may be happier in a taller 2-in-1 model, where the 100 lb version stands 44 in tall overall. A dog that cannot lie down will keep trying to stand, which makes the ride less steady.

Trailer only, or 2-in-1?

A plain trailer is lighter and folds flat; the 66 lb model weighs 22 lb. A 2-in-1 adds a front caster so you can unhitch at the park and push it as a stroller, which helps with older dogs or dogs recovering from surgery that can ride to the trail but not walk all of it. The 100 lb model folds its tow bar back and rolls on two 8 in swivel casters.

Check the hitch before you order. The Trail Hauler mounts at the rear axle of bikes with 24 in or larger wheels. Start with short rides at walking pace on a quiet path, and clip the inside tether to a harness, not a collar.

Small dogs: a stroller instead

Under about 15 lb, most dogs do not need a bike trailer at all. The Double Decker carries two pets up to 15 lb each on separate levels, and the top basket lifts off as a carrier.
